About

Publishing Futures is a research and design framework that explores broad, situated and ecological publishing practices. It considers publishing not just as the production of media or printed material, but as a relational and performative act embedded in cultural, political and material ecologies. Based on design-oriented research, Publishing Futures investigates how geographies, food, climates, culture, communities, publishing, archives and futures constitute substantive matter for public ritualisation that require strategies, systems and forms of publishing – tools for making ideas visible, sharing knowledge and promoting collective imagination.

This approach is informed by design methodologies of transitions, provocations, systemsvand multispecies thinking. It seeks forms of communication that are slow, embodied and affective, prioritising local knowledge, hybrid formats and alternative infrastructures. Publishing Futures maps out a territory where design becomes a way of looking after the future – publishing in other, admittedly transitory and self-critical ways.
